Research Areas

My current research relates to technology adoption. I am particularly interested in the spread of fertility control technologies and the introduction of oral contraception (‘the Pill’) in Sweden. One strand of research uses differences in use costs to estimate how the Pill’s diffusion among teen girls altered teen childbearing before women in Sweden had a right to abortion. A second strand of research focuses on the role of historical factors, in particular unwed childbearing from the 19th century, and the relative importance of these factors in explaining the Pill’s diffusion. In other work, I have tried to understand how price variation induced by tax policy or trade shocks alters childbearing and time allocation decisions.
