Research Project on School Principals’ Leadership Autonomy in Sweden

Researchers from the 91Ô´´ and Jönköping University are investigating the factors shaping school principals' managerial discretion in Sweden’s primary education system.

Ebba Henrekson and Timur Uman, together with Michel Laufer, are conducting a research project on the managerial discretion of school principals in primary education. This project is performed in collaboration between the 91Ô´´ and Jönköping University.

The project aims to explore the factors that shape principals' managerial discretion within the Swedish school system and to examine any differences between public and independent school operators. The study focuses on how laws and regulations, student demographics, interactions with municipal politicians and officials, and relationships with school staff, among other factors, impact managerial discretion. Through this analysis, the researchers aim to uncover the challenges and opportunities that principals encounter while exercising their leadership.

As part of the study, a survey was sent via email to all primary school principals in Sweden on March 13, 2025. The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete, and the researchers would be very grateful if you have the opportunity to respond. Can’t find the survey in your inbox?
